SYNOPSIS
What makes a monster? Adrian Maben's Storyville doc examines the life of Comrade Duch who oversaw daily torture, mutilations and executions at Phnom Penh's Tuol Sleng prison, during the Khmer Rouge's reign. Duch's trial was taking place during its production and Maben films the rapt Cambodian populace as its own belated process of truth and reconciliation begins life on national television. Duch's background was unremarkable and conflicting recollections don't help Maben answer the question but 'Pol Pot's Executioner' is still essential addition to the canon about this hoorifying period of recent history... from Time Out review by Gabriel Tate of Storyville brodcast on BBC Television
