SYNOPSIS
Expelled from Hollywood by the McCarthy witch hunt and accused of “Un-American Activities” as communist sympathisers, the cream of American cinema fled to Europe. In the 1950s and 60s “blacklisted” screenwriters worked in Paris and London, and Dalton Trumbo laid the foundations for what would later be nicknamed “Hollywood on the Tiber”. The directors base their documentary on a multi-voiced narrative, which is made possible by recently discovered archive footage filmed by two young film buffs who interviewed the “survivors” of the witch hunt at a banquet in 1983. They will be supplemented by archive material to provide historical context and film clips. Other contributors include film historian John Baxter, director Costa Gavras, Gianluca Farinelli, director of the Italian Cinematheque, film historian Pat McGilligan who was one of the organizers of the 1983 “Blacklist” dinner in LA, and Rebecca Prime, author of HOLLYWOOD EXILES IN EUROPE.
With what is going on in the United States at present, this quite obviously begs the question whether history repeats itself.
