Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Cleveland Orchestra
Louise Farrenc was a French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher of the Romantic period. Her compositions include three symphonies, a few choral works, chamber music and a wealth of piano music. A pupil of Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk Hummel, she also showed talent for composition so that her parents let her study composition with Anton Reicha at the age of fifteen. Her third symphony from 1847 is considered her greatest achievement.
PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION by Modest Mussorgsky is the title of a piano suite from 1874 depicting the works of architect and painter Viktor Hartmann. Ravel provided an ingenious orchestration.
