SYNOPSIS

Who wins a prize at the Chopin Competition, the Grand Prix at the Tchaikovsky Competition and First Prize at the Rubinstein Competition, all of it in the same year, and dares to play the complete TRANSCENDENTAL STUDIES by Liszt in concert, coupled with no less than Beethoven´s last sonata? Only Daniil Trifonov is capable of such a tour de force and to give “a titanic performance” as the Financial Times wrote. The physical and mental challenges of this two-hour long Program justified its audio-visual recording, in particular with the approach taken by director Pierre-Martin Juban who isolated the piano inside a circle of light creating a boxing ring atmosphere where piano and pianist could interact at a distance from the audience which listened in silence.
Filmed on his latest recital tour the program consists of Bach/Liszt FANTASY and FUGUE IN G MINOR, Beethoven SONATA NO. 32, Liszt 12 TRANSCENDENTAL STUDIES and Debussy REFLETS DANS L’EAU.
