SYNOPSIS

The origin of the Khasis has not been satisfactorily explained. The majority live in the state of Meghalaya in North-East India. It is a woman’s country, the last matrilineal society in India. Film maker Bettina Witte follows a young girl who has to make the difficult decision to become a Khadu or heiress of the family’s fortune. It must always be the youngest daughter as she can live the longest with the elderly parents in their house. How this fits into our modern world we shall find out when 16 year old Ibanroy finally makes her decision. One thing however is certain: Women have more rights in the Khasi capital Shillong than in other parts of India.
